TECHNOLOGY - NODE.JS

WHAT IS NODE.JS?

Node.js is a Javascript powered server side open source web application environment created in 2009 by Ryan Dahl. It is currently developed by Joyent and contributors on GitHub. Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that makes it lightweight and efficient. Additionally, it’s all based on the open web stack (HTML, CSS and JS) running over the standard port 80.

Node.js package ecosystem, npm, is the largest ecosystem of open source libraries in the world.

WHO USES NODE.JS?

Since its release, Node has gained widespread acceptance and is currently used in such high traffic applications as Corporate users of Node.js software include GoDaddy, Groupon, IBM, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Netflix, PayPal, Rakuten, SAP, Voxer, Walmart, Yahoo!, Cisco Systems etc. According to Stack Overflow, Node is the 9th most popular technology of 2016.

HOW TO GET STARTED WITH NODE.JS?

WHY NODE.JS?

  • Asynchronous I/O

It's built to handle asynchronous I/O from the ground up and is a good match to a lot of common web- and network-development problems. In addition to fast JavaScript execution, the real magic behind Node.js is called the Event Loop. To scale to large volumes of clients, all I/O intensive operations in Node.js are performed asynchronously.

  • JavaScript

Node.js is JavaScript.  So the same language can be used on the backend and frontend. This means it breaks down the boundaries between front- and back-end development.

  • Community Driven

In addition to its innate capabilities, Node.js has a thriving open source community which has produced many excellent modules to add additional capabilities to Node.js applications. One of the most famous is Socket.io, a module to manage persistent connections between client and server, enabling the server to push real-time updates to clients. Socket.io abstracts the technology used to maintain these connections away from the developer, automatically using the best technology available for a particular client (web sockets if the browser supports it, JSONP or Ajax long polling if not).

HOW CAN I CONTRIBUTE?

Node.js adheres to a code of conduct, and contributions, releases, and contributorship are under an open governance model.

To get started, there are open discussions on GitHub, and if there is something there you feel you can tackle, please make a pull request.
